Church and Target

I realize I haven't blogged in a long time, in fact, I almost didn't remember my password, but I came across Tony Morgan's blog that really got me thinking. Mainly because it hit close to home. I decided to post it here, but if you want to check out more of Tony Morgan's musings you can check it out here.

Tis the season to shop for Christmas gifts, so I recently made a trip to Target. I love Target because I don’t have to spend a lot of money, and I avoid going to Wal-Mart.
After spending a little bit of time in the store, it struck me how different Target is from most churches I’ve visited in the past. That led me to wondering how Target would be different if it operated like the typical church. So, with that in mind, here’s my initial list:
What if Target Operated Like a Church?
Instead of having men’s and women’s clothing departments, they would be called clever names like Impact and Embrace that are completely meaningless to new shoppers.
Each department in the store would have its own logo to go with their clever name. And, of course, all those logos would be different than the logo on the front of the store.
The workers in each department would all have their own t-shirts and flyers to promote what’s available in their departments. The youth clothing department would, of course, have the best flyers.
The store manager and his wife would be pictured on the front page of the website.
You wouldn’t actually be able to buy anything from the website, but each department would have its own page explaining why they are such a great department and the the information would be several months out-of-date.
If you are in the shoe department and have a question about flashlights, the shoe department employee has no idea how to help you because it doesn’t have anything to do with shoes.
Shoppers would be able to start their own departments so that they can buy the items that they want to buy. Don’t worry…that means there will certainly be a clothing department for singles.
Shoppers would also be able to appoint their own store manager and then serve on committees and boards to tell the store manager what to do.
The store would only be open one day a week between 9:00 a.m. and noon and on the first Wednesday evening of every month.
Hope this makes you laugh. And, maybe it also challenges some preconceived notions. After all, churches are sort of notorious for worshiping methods and traditions whether or not they actually produce results.

What I Do All Day

The running joke around here is that I only "work" one day a week and the rest of the time I play solitaire all day. Well, after being asked all the time as to what I do, and thanks to Josh Griffin's blog, I came across this list of things I do.

Here are some examples of what I do: pray, study, read, keep up culture (not very easy to do), preach, teach, share, text, email, facebook, twitter, administrate, organize, make phone calls, return phone calls, conflict resolution, plan activities, confront, encourage, get frustrated, strategize, buy new tools for ministry, edit video, clean up, talk to parents, support my pastor, go to meetings, travel, meet new people, raise money, balance my time with my family, go to school events (concerts, games, …), develop leaders, update website, share life with others, stay up all night, drive a van and go out to eat!

That's my life in a nutshell.

Creativity

Just read a post by Brad Lomenick about the most creative people in business. As I read through the list I realized I only knew a few of the names. It also made me think that we as Christ-followers should be the most creative people on the planet because we are believers in the Master Creator. It bugs me to think that we as a subculture are always following--we can't even come up with our own original t-shirts! We should be the ones starting trends and creating culture, but we can't do that if we are constantly trying to "maintain."

I realize this is a generalized post and not all Christ-followers fall into the uncreative category, but most do--including myself.

How can we reach our communities, or cultures if you will, in ways we never have before?

Just a brief, random thought to start my Monday.

Nine or One

This is my first graduating class here in Indiana. I've been here long enough to see this year's grads go from jr. high all the way through to high school, and I can't help but ask myself, "Did I do my job?" They are all going their separate ways--college, military, jobs--but will they be part of the 9 or the 1. Statistics show that 9 out of 10 high school students graduate from God when they graduate from high school.

I can't help but feel that I haven't done all I could to prepare them. I should have spent more time with them, invested in them, and taught them more. Ultimately the choice is there's. That sounds like a cop out but it isn't. I can't want something for them more than they want it for themselves.

God, guide them, keep them, use them.

What Jesus Didn't Teach

As a church, Hope's Point has been focusing on reaching others for Christ. We've focused our talks, sermons, small groups, and even our website around being "salt and light." So today I was catching up on some blogs and came across this (read the entire post here):

When Jesus began calling the first disciples into ministry, he used this phrase:
“Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
For whatever reason, I started thinking about what Jesus didn’t say to those first disciples.
He didn’t say: “Come, follow me, and I will teach you spiritual insights!”
He didn’t say: “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to worship together!”
He didn’t say: “Come, follow me, and I will gather you together in a home group!”
He didn’t say: “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to pray!”
He didn’t say: “Come, follow me, and I will make you members of the church!”

Gave me a new perspective on what our mission and focus should be. Thanks, Tony.

Most Important Thing Today

I was extremely busy today and actually got most of my to-do list accomplished. I started off by updating the church's website and editing Pastor's sermon in order to upload it to the site. I then had a meeting discussing security/emergency procedures for the church (Sunday's incident in IL was a wake up call). Ran some errands before beginning premarital counseling with a soon-to-be-married couple.

All of these things are important and essential to the ministry I do here, but the most important thing I did today came when I got home.

As Rachel was cooking dinner I took Trent outside to ride his tricycle, which he normally pushes Flintstone style. Today I was able to put a new feather in my "Daddy" hat. I taught him to pedal his tric! As my chest puffed with pride and my grin widened by the second I realized that all the important things I do throughout the day take a back seat to my role as daddy to a little two-year-old boy. I choose to play the role that no one else can play over the role that anyone can play.

Raising Your Kids In A Fishbowl

I just read a great blog by Craig Groeschel about Raising a PK. Having been one I can really relate to what he wrote, and now that my son is a PK I want to be very deliberate and conscious about how we raise him. Here's his post:

Ministry can be very hard on pastor’s children.
Your kids will hear you criticized.
Your kids will watch you hurt.
Your kids may see you wrongly strike back.
Your kids might see your hypocrisy up close.
Your kids might reject the church because you’re always there.
Your kids may enjoy the extra attention when they are young and despise it when they mature.
No matter how healthy your church is, a pastor’s kid will likely feel a different sort of pressure. Here are a few things we do to help our kids grow up in the fishbowl:
We put the kids’ activities ahead of the church calendar. If my girls have a piano recital on Saturday night, either I pre-produce the message or have someone else speak.
I rarely work evenings. The evenings are family time. I also try not to compromise my day off with church needs.
I don’t talk about my kids in a sermon without their permission.
Amy and I work hard not to talk negatively about the church.
We don’t make our kids go to church every week. Every now and then we let them stay home or do something else so going to church doesn’t become a legalistic chore.
We live our private lives with personal devotion to Christ. We pray and talk about spiritual things with our children regularly.

I don't necessarily agree with not making your kids go to church each week, but the rest are really good.

What Do I Do?

I was just catching up on a friend's blog when I came across this post. It's very timely considering some of the conversations I've had over the last few days both in person and over the phone. I'll post it here but I'm giving him credit. Thanks, Steve.

Sometime this past week, I had to go to church for a leader's meeting. I was in the evening and Evan, my 6 yr. old son, asked "why do you have to be in the meeting?" I said, "because I'm one of the bosses there." He responded with a grin on his face, "cool!"

Being a "pastor" is certainly cool and it does have it advantages, but it isn't a walk in the park. I suppose most people have no idea what a "pastor" or those in leadership do or think or spend their time on. The joke for many is that pastors only work one day. Although it's a joke, many believe it.

Some think that pastors know everything about the bible and religions in the world. Some think the pastor gets paid from magic money falling from heaven. Some think pastors should get paid nothing. Some think there's no reason for pastors. Some think it's the pastors job to initiate and carry on every project, program, study, discussion, idea, or movement. Some think they're not special enough to do ministry. Some think only pastors can pray to God. Some get upset when they find out that the pastor isn't perfect (but doesn't what anyone to know how they aren't). Some feel relieved knowing the pastor isn't perfect.

And I would agree that one of the responsibilities of the pastor is to motivate, to teach, to come along side, to train, to comfort, to pray with and for, to study, to understand, to do, to create, to initiate, to organize, to encourage, to proclaim, to rally, to lead, to challenge, to call others to live a life for God (and that's just for himself and his family).

Most will never understand what great responsibility and pressure pastors experience everyday in doing the work God has called them to do on this earth. Certainly the work of the Holy Spirit in Christians is a plus (that's assuming many listen to the HS and don't "push him away").

I have great respect for pastors, but I do think that sometimes, pastors fail in leading the church to a deep, initimate, devoted life to God in everything people do. I think sometimes, we as Christians, fail ourselves by buying into and expecting and waiting for the pastor to do everything for us and get upset when they don't meet our "expectations."

What assumptions do you have about those in ministry? or those in Christian leadership?

25 Random Things

1. I'm a twin (No, we're not identical).
2. I'm the youngest of five kids (My twin brother is 3 minutes older then I am).

Only Me

I know some people would consider me accident prone but I would have to disagree. I just happen to have strange things happen to me! Those of you who have known me for a while now what some of those "strange" things are, but I'm about to add one of the strangest to the list.

Sunday night we had our yearly kick-off for The MiX Student Ministries by having one of our famous gym nights. One of the games we played was Musical Chairs of Death (check the link for the rules). In the process of the game I tried to throw a very light ball very hard, which of course is nearly impossible. As I launched the ball with the purpose of inflicting pain on a teenager, I felt a pop in my side and the pain was inflicted on myself instead.

As far as I can tell I'm the only person who cracked a rib playing musical chairs!

First Incident

I got a voicemail from Rachel this morning that said "Trent busted his head. Could you please come home?" That's never good, especially with my family's history of head wounds. I ran home expecting to see blood everywhere, but instead I walked in to see Trent jumping on the bed in the in the guest room! Apparently he decided to climb up on a chair to get on the bed but the seat portion of the chair gave way and he went through head first cutting himself on a screw. No serious damage done, just a bump and small cut, but I guess the fun of having a son has officially begun!

It's Official

After six years, yes, count 'em, six, I can finally say that I have a son!! Trent became a Todd yesterday at 11:05 AM. I'm still numb because it doesn't seem real yet. We've had Trent since he was 10 months old, which is almost a year and a half. For all practical purposes he was our son from day one, but now it's legal, baby!

He is now Trent Andrew Logan Todd.

We can't thank all of you who've prayed enough. This has definitely been a God thing, and we hope to raise Trent as God would see fit.

Big News

Yesterday was a day we knew would come but didn't really think it would be anytime soon. We finally have a date for Trent's adoption!

It's incredible to think that in less than six weeks he will be a Todd! This has been a long journey. A journey that has taken us to different places, both physical and emotional. We've been able to meet so many people and learn so many new things about God's grace and provision. I must confess that I was extremely hesitant at first, but now that I will be able to say that I have a son, it was all worth it.

It's been a long six years. Who knew God would bring us here!

Sleepy Time

Once again, it has been forever since I've updated.

Anyway, I'll be getting a sleep study done tonight. What I thought would be something I'd have to deal with for the rest of my life, snoring, turns out may not be good for me. Apparently I may have sleep apnea, which means I stop breathing in my sleep and my brain doesn't get enough oxygen, and it's a little frightening. I just found out not long ago that my brother and several other family members have it.

I'll have to post more later because I'm beginning to make myself more nervous just talking about it.

Shuffle Up and Deal 2

Rachel and I made up a new car game yesterday. I got an iPod car jack for Christmas so now all my tunes go with me. The game consists of setting your iPod to shuffle and try to guess if the next song is English or Spanish (if you don't know two different languages you'll have to make up your own rules). You can still play if you don't have an iPod. Just use the iTunes party mix. If you don't have iTunes, you're not cool, because it's the best music player out there and it's FREE!!

Echoes of Me

Wow! Once again I realize that this blog is updated far less than first intended!

Well, I have again seen a picture of myself in Trent. He's at the fun age of discovery. He's constantly learning new things as well as getting into everything! One of his favorite "hobbies" is getting into the dog's food and water dishes. He either throws food at Chico or splashes in the water. Now, he knows that is a "no, no" but that doesn't seem to matter most of the time. After hearing that repeatedly a couple of days ago he ended up in his bed for a while. When he was allowed to "think" (like that actually happens) about what he had done I brought him out, showed him the dishes, and said, for the hundredth time, "NO!" I put him down and continued with what I was doing, but not more than 30 seconds after that I see him head back to the dishes and squat down as close as he could to them. Before I could say anything to him he began shacking his head and saying "no, no". He would reach out his hand wanting to splash in the water, but didn't quite get close enough to it. He knew he was not supposed to mess with it, but he got as close as he could to it.

This was one of those moments where God just hit me upside the head! That is me! I get as close as I can to sin without actually sinning (is that even possible?). I know it's wrong and I know it brings consequences, but still I want to get as close as I can! I tell myself "no" but, like Paul, I end up doing that which I don't want. It makes me wonder if God feels the same way as a Father as I feel as a father--frustrated when our child knows what to do and doesn't do it.

It's amazing how God can use a 16-month-old little boy to work in the life of a 30-year-old man (some would still say boy!) to give him little wake up call and reminder. The Christian walk keeps life interesting!

Puke and Love

Ok, Rachel and I have this agreement when it comes to Trent clean up: I clean what comes out the top, she cleans what comes out the bottom. I thought I had fooled her and given her the raw end of the deal...I was wrong! I got a phone call from Rachel today no more than five minutes after she left my office on her way to Ft. Wayne. All she said was, "Meet me at home. Trent's puking." Being the "save-the-day" wannabe dad/husband that I am, I said, "I'll be right there!" (You can almost see my chest puffed out and my hands on my waist a la superhero.)

I don't want to be gross so I will spare you the details, but I will say it was A LOT and it was CHUNKY! Very chunky! So after hosing down the car seat and the baby (and nearly throwing up several times myself) all we could do was laugh!

This "interesting" experience, though, was a reminder of Christ's love. I know, it sounds a little weird, but just follow me for a second. Come to find out, Trent had drunk from last night's bottle and that is what made him sick. I know I do the same thing and, no, that's not an analogy for drinking. There are things I desire that aren't good for me, much like Trent and his milk. Even when the consequences are nasty we know we can still go to our Father to "hose us down." The consequences are still there (in Trent's case I don't think that car will ever smell the same again), but God cleans up the mess and forgives us. Trent's filthy, smelly, nasty condition didn't change how much I love him, and our sin will never cause God to love us less (Romans 8).

Anyway, that's my "deep" thought for the day! By the way, does anyone know how to get the smell of curdled milk out of your nose?

New Thoughts on Worship

Wow! I just realized I haven't blogged in over three months! Well, I'll have to catch up some other time.

Meanwhile, I've mentioned before that I read several blogs regularly. Today as I was catching up on my blog reading and I came accross this post by Josh Griffin. I won't quote the entire blog, but he refers to a situation at their church where a friend of his wife had just accepted Christ last week and was telling Josh's wife about it during the first couple of songs during their worship time. They were excitedly sharing about Jesus' love and this life change when the lady in front of them kept turning around and looking at them with "those eyes." She finally turned around and said, "I'm sorry, but can you guys talk to each other later? I'm trying to worship." To quote Josh, "during her 'worship' she missed the most beautiful expression of worship ever. Angels were dancing in Heaven and she was ticked on earth."

To be fair, we don't know what that woman may have been going through, therefore, I'm not trying to condemn her. How many times do we do the same? We get so into our little moment of what we believe to be "worship" that we miss the most important thing around us--life-change! If there's the slightest disruption we all turn to see who's being so disrespectful. I know I have and I do. Josh's last statement really caught my attention: "Maybe our first reaction to a diruption in the service is that God is up to something, instead of someone being distracted."

Wake Up Call

There are several blogs I try to read on a regular basis, if not a daily basis. One of those belongs to Rachel's cousin Gretchen. Her post today really made me think about something that I'm reminded of often, but this time I'm going to write it down.
She mentioned how she loves to read and is always talking about what she's read and giving others advice on books and so forth (her last few blog entries have been on this topic). Today, though, she realized that she "rarely offer up insights I gained from my personal Bible reading".
This brings me to my thoughts. I'm constantly thinking of ways to help grow the church--new ideas, new methods, training leaders, discipling, etc.--but I sometimes lose track of my own growth, my own training, or my own discipleship. Today was one of those days that I just truly got into my personal Bible reading. I just wanted to keep reading more! I love those days!
If there's one thing I've learned over the last few years, it is this: be a life-long learner. Once you reach a point where you think you have things under control and you set life on cruise, which I seem to do way too often, there's a problem. I hope to never reach a point where I no longer want to grow or learn. Yes, I sometimes get lazy, I'll admit that, but deep down I still want to continue growing in knowledge and faith.
I don't think Gretchen even knows I read her blog, and I highly doubt she reads mine, but still the same, thanks for the reminder, Gret.

Humbled...Again

This seems to happen to me quite often. Every time I start to think I'm doing a good job and that things couldn't run without me, God quickly reminds me how untrue that is.
The discussion last night at small group centered around how we can fulfill the Cultural Command around us. It was great because I didn't have to say a word about what "we should do" as a group. This small group has stepped up and realized that there's more to their individual lives than themselves, and they've come up with a plan to begin reaching out to all the new people who have been attending our church over the last few months.
I can't tell you how awesome it is to see God working in their lives. It's even more awesome to see how they are allowing God to work in and through them!

Point to Ponder

We had our small group on Wednesday. I love small group because you never know where our discussions will lead. We usually end up on rabbit trails, but they're interesting rabbit trials and times of growth.
This week one of the rabbit trails led to a discussion of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son [Jesus], and God the Holy Spirit). As I was trying to think of an intelligent yet simple way to describe a concept our finite minds cannot even begin to comprehend, someone (I can't give names because we have a confidentiality agreement in our group) explained that you can compare the Trinity to an egg: all three parts (shell, white, yolk) are individual but still one egg. As we were all amazed at the simplicity of that answer, someone decided to be funny and ask which part of the egg would be the Father, which part would be the Son, and so on. Once again, before I could say that you can't read into it that much someone else gave this awesome explanation:

The egg's shell is the protection (God). The egg white is the inner membrane that purifies the egg (Jesus). The egg yolk provides the nutrients for the growing embryo (Holy Spirit).

Very interesting.

Rachel's B-Day

I'm hoping Rachel doesn't see this because she's having a hard time with this one. She was sad most of the day yesterday because it was her last day in her 20's (shhhhh).
We view the ominous 3-0 differently. I won't try to explain her reasons for not wanting to turn thi...that age. Instead I'll just give my outlook.
I've been having a hard time recently with people not taking me seriously. It's mainly because of my age. "Oh, you're still a kid!" is the attitude I get most of the time when I express my opinions or ideas. As I was discussing this with my pastor, he said something interesting: "It's now how long you've been on the road, but how far you've traveled." That was extremely encouraging! I don't mind turning 30 mainly because I'm hoping to be taken a little more seriously! I know, I know...it probably won't happen...but I can hope!

By the way, Rachel is not 30; she is 20-10.

Small Group

We've started our new series in our small group. It's called Wide Angle: Framing Your Worldview. It deals with the followging:

Thoughts for the week

This has been an interesting week for me. I could write about many things, but one thing in particular seems to keep coming to mind: what is my motive? My motives were misread a couple of weeks ago and it was a wake up call. I can be somewhat controlling and dogmatic in certain areas of my ministry and that comes accross in the wrong way. I truly want to honor and glorify God in everything I do and say, but I guess it's not as apparent as I thought it was. This past week has also caused me to examine myself to see if I am really trying to glorify Him or simply seeking others' approval. It's a struggle.
